The Hon. Dr Nicholas Blain is one of Australia’s foremost authorities in workplace relations, whose outstanding contribution to Australian and international workplace relations has been recognised by many.

His unique career has spanned a period of more than 45 years.

Dr Blain has:

  • advised and assisted Ministers on labour relations strategy, policy, and legislation;
  • published extensively on the subject of industrial relations;
  • taught industrial relations at University graduate and undergraduate levels;
  • represented Australia internationally as a labour relations expert;
  • provided extensive national media commentary on industrial relations issues;
  • held senior leadership positions in employee organisations; and
  • held senior management positions in the private sector.

He held the office of Deputy President of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission for a period of 7 years. He conciliated, arbitrated or otherwise resolved in excess of 1,600 cases.

Most recently, Dr Blain has been in private practice as a Workplace Relations Strategist. He provides specialist services to leading Australian companies, professional practitioners, employees and unions.

Dr Blain maintains an active involvement in workplace relations strategy and in mentoring. He continues to contribute to media debate on workplace issues.
